Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Project by SAB
Last year SAB partnered with FASfacts to implement an educational and awareness campaign on Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). An investment of R1 million was made by SAB to help FASfacts roll out a series of projects in the Western and Northern Cape
The projects included the creation and implementation of separate education programmes for school learners (Grade 6, 7, 10 and 11), pregnant woman, farm workers (the farming community) and shebeen and tavern owners.
Some of the provided funds were also used for the opening of a working office in Upington to help establish the presence of FASfacts and be more effective in the implementation of its projects in this specific area as Upington is one of the areas with the highest incidence levels of FAS.
SAB received positive endorsements from stakeholders for the FAS project. In support of the FAS project, SAB also launched an internal employee campaign to raise awareness on FAS during September and October 2009. Employees were encouraged to pledge their support by purchasing a wristband with a special message in taking a stand against FAS. In total R20 000 has been raised through the employee campaign and the funds were used to buy educational toys for J.J Luxton Primary School in the Northern Cape.
